I'm honestly wondering if it's the registry file that's "breaking" the icon for Edge legacy (it shouldn't be, but you really never know). (However, if one is comfortable with editing the registry itself, it's really easy to just add it in yourself without the need for this registry file.) It seems like you've done a lot to try to get this sorted, tbh. We do not suggest users download files designed to edit their registry keys as they can easily break things.
This is indeed how a regular user can set this up, but it's also not really intended for regular users this way. It looks like you used these steps to set up side by side, and that this site has you download a registry file to edit your registry keys. :3 I followed your trail that you've left trying to find an answer to this, so hopefully I have all the details I need.
